Double Bach

Antonio Ruz

Share

The collaboration between the choreographer Antonio Ruz and the musician Pablo Martín Caminero has resulted in a captivating work in which Bach’s Cello Suites 1 and 2 are adapted for the double bass. With the dancing of Melania Olcina, the work proposes an inner and intimate space that the performers share: a void and a state of non-thinking, solitude in company, an ocean desert; a blank canvas on which the music, movement and light (or its absence) evoke fragility, depth and imbalance. The return to simplicity.

Double Bach represents a further step forward in the career of Antonio Ruz, who leads his own company and has found his identity in a blend of languages and collaboration with artists working in other disciplines such as the plastic arts and early and contemporary music.

The Compañía Antonio Ruz, founded in 2009 by its director and choreographer, engages in research in the field of movement and forges partnerships with artists in other disciplines. It has performed in Spain, Europe, Africa and South America, notably works such as No Drama, Ignot, Ull, Allibera Em!, Vaivén, À L'Espagnole fantasia escènica and Beautiful Beach. Ruz trained in flamenco, Spanish dance and ballet and has had an impressive career as dancer with major Spanish and international companies (Ballet Víctor Ullate, Ballet of the Grand Théâtre de Genève, Ballet de l’Opéra de Lyon, Compañía Nacional de Danza and Sasha Waltz & Guests). A leading figure in dance in Spain and abroad today, he now combines his work leading his company in Madrid with his work as an assistant choreographer with the Sasha Waltz & Guests company in Berlin, and various theatre, musical and educational projects. Ruz was awarded the 2013 Ojo Crítico Prize in the Dance category by the Spanish broadcaster RTVE.
