Opening

Institut del Teatre de la Diputació de Barcelona

Share

We launch La Quinzena Metropolitan Dance with the young talented dancers who have emerged from the classes of the Institut del Teatre, a training centre that is unique in Europe. Every year, over a thousand pupils pass through its doors, doing advanced, professional and improvement courses in dance and drama.

The opening show includes six pieces in different styles in which some 40 dancers from the Conservatori Professional de Dansa (CPD), the Conservatori Superior de Dansa (CSD) and the IT Dansa youth company will perform.

Let the emotions whisk you away as you enjoy the amazing and moving dances that will thrill you thanks to the young artists’ force. You will see contemporary dance, neoclassical dance and flamenco fusion pieces, all bearing the seal of quality of works that come out of the Institut del Teatre.

Take a good look: the principal dancers of the future are on stage and they are bound to impress.

Wad Ras (extract), Increpación Danza

Fusion

Wad Ras takes its title from the name of the women’s prison in Barcelona; a real and recognisable image, a micro society in which the sounds of flamenco abound. We talk about frustration, about being deprived of freedom, about oppression, fear and loneliness. The work avoids narrative realism and instead presents universal situations that can be extrapolated to any set of circumstances.

Wad Ras is a wail, an admonishment of fear, injustice and despair.

Wad Ras was awarded first prize at the Fifth Spanish and Flamenco Dance Choreography Competition in Madrid in July 1996.

Zelentsova (extract), La Veronal

Contemporary dance

Zelentsova is a theatre play on the concept of the absurd. A passage that is choreographically isolated and empty of meaning but with clear drawings, dissociated forms and links to means of expression inspired by silent films and the patterns of Hungarian dances. With a measure of philosophy in the universe of the absurd, the characters finally fail because they lack meaning.

Walking through the Baroque, Vicky Sàiz

Classical dance

This piece is structured in three movements, the first two set to music by the English composer Henry Purcell, and the third to music by the German-born British composer George Frederick Handel. The dancers move to the tempos of the music in a promenade, surrounded by the colours and nuances of the Baroque.

LUA, Drew Jiménez

Contemporary flamenco fusion

LUA situates the female dancer in her various roles, in her various states, using the serene and sacred tempo of flamenco to honour feminine cycles and the influence of the moon on the fertile or barren body.

Business world, Montón de paja & trigo - Javier Guerrero Nieto

Contemporary dance

Business World is a duet inspired by silent films, a type of cinematographic work that consists solely of images. This was our starting point for creating a show in which the relationships begin fortuitously before eventually leading to much more direct connections. Movement is explored in an abstract manner, devoid of meaning in a game in which the text, dance and the word create a range of images that remind us of various isolated places, influenced by the approaches taken in silent films and absurd movies.

Minus 16, IT Dansa (Institut del Teatre youth dance company)

Contemporary dance

Minus 16 features music such as the cha-cha-cha, mambo and folksongs from Israel; melodies that are familiar and pleasing.

The piece advances rapidly through a number of frames of mind: from joy to dejection, from privacy to communal fun… The outcome is a fusion between the dancer and the spectator, making the choreography particularly personal and unique every time it is performed.
