Birdy

Birdy, choreographed by LAI Hung-chung, is a poetic exploration of freedom and its limits within Taiwanese communities. Drawing on feathers and staffs from the Peking Opera, the piece transforms these elements into symbols of inner struggle. By blending tai chi, contemporary movement, and electronic and traditional Chinese music, it invites audiences to reflect on identity and the courage required to redefine one’s own freedom. The production has received several awards, including the Audience Award for Best Choreography at Tanzplattform Bern (Switzerland) and the Odoru Akita International Dance Festival, as well as First Prize at the New York International Choreography Contest.

Founded in 2017 by artistic director LAI Hung-chung, Hung Dance is a Taiwanese company that brings together tradition and modernity. With works such as Watcher, Birdy and Push and Pull, the company has performed internationally and runs the Stray Birds platform for emerging choreographers. By fusing Chinese opera, mythology and tai chi, Hung Dance creates performances with a strong emotional and cultural impact.
