Lake Machine
In Lake Machine, Mari Paula deploys sensitivity and determination to visit the classical universe that has enchained women for centuries. Drawing on ballet and theatre, she frees three iconic figures—Odette, Odile and Ophelia—from the roles of victims, madwomen or martyrs imposed by male authors. The work rewrites the fate of these characters while being a profoundly autobiographical act, in which the director confronts the grief of her three stillborn daughters and transforms this intimate experience into a liberating choreography.
Mari Paula (Brazil, 1984) works between dance and performance. With training in performing arts, cultural management and hybrid practices, she propels her company to explore themes such as migration, womanhood, love and death, and the relationship between body and territory. She has worked with Balé Teatro Guaíra and Casa Selvática; received the Funarte Klauss Vianna Award; and presented works in the Americas, Europe and Africa. She is also co-founder of Las Vivas, Plataforma Iberoamericana de Danza.
