Benin Did Not Die She Sends Her Regards

Best International Dance Short Film, Choreoscope 2025

This is the journey of a strange funeral procession in a semi-urban African village. Accompanied by a poet and a group of artists, the procession makes its way to bury its dead in a poetic film project on African arts and restitution, taking the 1897 Benin Punitive Expedition as its central theme. Its aims are to highlight the impact of the cultural loss caused by colonialism, to correct racist narratives and to portray African heritage as told by Africans.

Saba, a young Iranian woman, is a dancer. She wants to seem indifferent to her surroundings and project her authentic self and freedom through her body. But the art of existence is forbidden in a fundamentalist religious state that ignores the most basic human rights. This film is a portrait of the everyday oppression women face in Iran on their path towards freedom.

SCRY

International première. To ‘scry’ is to predict the future through a mirror. Divination, an often forbidden visual ritual, is considered dangerous and supposedly feminine. This short film follows two women wrapped in their private world as they carry out a transformative ritual.

Sehen

The Skin Collective is a collective made up of dancers, actors and visual artists from Germany, France, Greece and Chile created to forge connections between the body and its environment. Sehen offers an absurd, dystopian, dark perspective on social behaviours and agreements. It is an attempt to portray the process of humans trying to become part of nature, merge with it and turn against themselves as nature is destroyed.

The decision to work exclusively with naked male bodies reflects the need to explore a different form of representation within the audiovisual industry. These naked bodies neither seduce nor sell, but resist, touch and hesitate in a choreography of insurgent presences that exposes the algorithms of desire and consumption, freeing the body from its social moulds.

Supersexual
Bulgaria; 2023 - Running time: 5 min. 58 sec.

A young Bulgarian man, trapped in the endless rollercoaster of workouts, anonymous sex and dopamine, wonders how to step out of a world where the body is everything. The film explores queer men’s obsession with their bodies as fetishes of desire, pleasure and self-confidence and questions how the body becomes a weapon within fitness culture, casual sex and fleeting encounters. By bringing together videogame imagery, 3D scans, online conversations and archives of the ideal male body, the film asks whether it is possible to completely shed bodies within this hypersexual culture.

Feel the Beat

The night Adam sees Lisa dance, he falls madly in love. The lovebirds soon marry and after a few good years now have a house, a child and an ordinary suburban life. Adam becomes increasingly absorbed by work and has less time for pleasure. Lisa, meanwhile, enjoys an active social life within Stockholm’s swing community, as the couple slowly drifts apart. Until one day tragedy strikes…

Pol Pot Dancing

Chea Samy, a celebrated dancer at the Royal Palace of Cambodia, raises a child as her own in her home within the palace grounds. Years later, as a forced labourer under the Khmer Rouge regime, she discovers that her adopted son is Pol Pot. The film tells the little-known story of the origins and rule of Pol Pot and his connection to classical Cambodian dance.

Body-Buildings

Body-Buildings brings together dance, architecture and cinema, fusing identities and concepts. It contains six choreographies created for six architectural works in six locations across Portugal, sketching possible futures and memories to come.

ANIMATION FOR ADULTS

Orchid in a frenzy
France; 2024 - Running time: 3 min. 32 sec.

Paris, 1889. A young woman suffering from a neurological disorder is admitted to the Salpêtrière Hospital. Her condition, known as St Vitus’ dance, causes spasms and uncontrollable movements. She discovers dance during the famous Mad Women's Ball, held once a year at the institution, and finds a different way of healing in this art.

Martine is a relationship counsellor at the Maison des Femmes in Montreuil. Between each case and dance steps, she invites us in and speaks about how women who are survivors of domestic violence are welcomed and about the struggle they face when they arrive at the association.

Živa

Živa is a poetic exploration of inner struggle and liberation. Trapped by oppressive green threads, Živa’s body and spirit begin to dissolve. She draws strength from the red world—her unconscious—and reclaims her freedom, breaking the bonds that imprison her. Through movement, self-knowledge and the fusion of green and red, she creates a radiant new harmony.

Ira

Deep within a volcano and consumed by seething rage, Ira unleashes a spectacular eruption. In this boiling world, she meets a giant who helps her release her inner power. Now transformed into a giant herself, Ira leads the volcano’s inhabitants in a liberating dance, turning their world into an endless sea of lava.

Paradis Murdar

In her attempt to achieve perfection and fit into what she considers the ideal, a woman seeks to impose control over her own (bodily) image. Ignoring her true essence, she tries to dominate her actions until she completely loses control.

Undark
Austria; 2025 - Running time: 6 min. 11 sec.

Undark was the trade name of the radium-based luminous paint used by the Radium Girls. It combines the prefix un- (often indicating negation) with dark, referring to its ability to glow in the dark. Yet what promised illumination instead led to illness and death for the workers.
