Before meeting aspiring actress Kathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds), silent film idol Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) thought he had it all: fame, fortune and success. But when he meets her, he realises that she is what was really missing in his life. With the advent of sound in cinema, Don wants to shoot musicals with Kathy, but they are challenged by the queen of silent film, Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen).
